Newcastle are facing a risk by keeping Yohan Cabaye until the end of the season, as the £20million-rated French midfielder will be able to walk away from St James’ Park for as little as £6million in the summer, according to the Daily Mirror.

France international Cabaye could be entitled to buy out the final remaining two years of his five-year-contract under FIFA’s Webster Rule.

This has put Newcastle in the difficult position of deciding whether to cash in on a player they value at £20million plus this month, or keep him but face the risk of losing him for almost a quarter of the price in the summer.

Cabaye has a £60k a week deal which runs until June 2016, but Article 17 of FIFA’s transfer rules states that the midfielder (and any other player in his situation who were under the age of 28 when they signed) can cancel the contract “without just cause”, by paying his employers the remaining value of the deal and move elsewhere on a free transfer.

Newcastle used the Webster Rule to their advantage when they signed Jonas Gutierrez on the cheap from Spanish side Mallorca in 2008.

The club refused to comment as to whether they had a deal in place to prevent Cabaye using this option in the summer.

The 27-year-old has been attracting interest from Arsenal, Liverpool and Paris St Germain.
