Sammy Ameobi is hoping he impresses in the Europa League this week to show he can be picked for Newcastle‘s Premier League first team.

It is expected that Ameobi will be starting for the Magpies in their Europa League fixture at Club Brugge in Belgium this Thursday. He took part in Newcastle’s 1-0 victory over Club Brugge at home, creating the match-winning goal for Gabriel Obertan and came on as a substitute in the Liverpool draw at the weekend.

Ameobi believes Newcastle’s place in European competition gives the younger players more opportunities of playing for the side and to make an impression, in order to play more Premier League football. Sammy Ameobi is quoted saying in The Shields Gazette: “Newcastle having European football’s a big plus for us young kids trying to push through. It gives us opportunities to try and play, which is great, really. Hopefully, I can impress in those games and show the manager that I’m ready to step up, really.”

He is also happy that his older brother Shola, who made it into the first team during the 2000/01 season, said to The Shields Gazette how his younger brother “could surpass” him.

They both took part in the Club Brugge game.

Sammy Ameobi said: “It’s great to hear him saying that about me. I’ve got people telling me I’ve got good ability, but at the end of the day that’s not everything. It’s about hard work. I’m trying work on that at the moment. That’s more important, for me, than the ability I have. If I get that right, the ability will shine through.”

Both Ameobi brothers took part in Newcastle’s last Europa League Club Brugge game.
