Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is looking for a way to keep Steven Taylor fit for the rest of the season.

The centre-back has managed just 13 Premier League appearances this term due to a hamstring injury.

He has returned recently, helping the Magpies secure back-to-back wins against Aston Villa and Chelsea.

Pardew admitted that his injury record is frustrating, but that is keen to keep the 27-year-old fully fit and reform his solid partnership with Fabricio Coloccini:

“He’s an outstanding player. The only down-side has been the injuries, that’s where you have to slightly have a disappointment with him, that he’s just not played enough games in his career here.” He isquoted by the Daily Mail.

“I am very, very conscious, with him and with my staff, that we protect him and try to give him a different regime where hopefully we can keep him fit – because when he is fit, there are not many better.”

Taylor was one of the Tyne club’s star performers for the opening half of last season, but suffered an Achilles tendon injury, forcing him to the side-lines for five months.

Newcastle coped in his absences, but have missed him a great deal this term, with their poor form seeing them sucked toward the relegation zone.

With the club having signed Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa from Montpellier during January, the pressure is on Taylor to maintain full fitness, with the Frenchman previously regarded as one of Ligue 1’s top defenders.
