Europa League stalemate with Metalist Kharkiv.

The Magpies had two goals, both struck by Papiss Cisse, ruled out as they were held to a goalless draw at St James’ Park by their Ukrainian rivals.

The result leaves them having to travel to Eastern Europe looking for a win to advance to the last-16 of the competition.

Taylor said after the game that he was upset to see Cisse’s efforts disallowed, hinting that he felt both should have stood:

“We’re absolutely gutted,” he told Sky Sports.

“The gaffer has just made the point to us that we should be 2-0 ahead. We had those two goals chalked off; we’re disappointed with that.

“It was one of our best performances in a while. Everything the gaffer asked of us we did, we just didn’t win.”

But, the 27-year-old was positive about this side’s chances of getting a result in the away leg, insisting that they showed the ability and togetherness to suggest they can test Metalist:

“Tonight showed we have goals in us,

“We can go there with more confidence than them. We will hope to pose them more problems.”

French midfielder Yohan Cabaye was also upbeat, saying that Newcastle are in a good position having prevented Metalist from netting any potentially vital away goals:

“It was a tough game. The important things is we haven’t conceded a goal,” he said.

“If we are doing the right thing away from home, we score, then they have to score two.

“That’s the main thing from tonight.”
