On this day in 1996 Columbian sensation Faustino Asprilla arrived on Tynside in the middle of a snowstorm and wearing a fur coat.

He went on to have a love-hate relationship with Newcastle fans during his three seasons at St. James’ Park after his £6.7million move from Parma, with a number of lacklustre performances outweighing his match winning games.

Many fans blamed him for the club missing out on the Premier League title in his first season at the club, but worship him for his hat-trick against Barcelona in the Champions League as Newcastle won 3-2 at St. James’ Park.

All in all, the flamboyant striker bagged nine goals in 48 league games and nine in 11 European games before being sold back to Parma for £6million in 1998.

Here’s a brilliant compilation of his Newcastle goals. Which one is your favourite?
