Arsenal and Chelsea have been dealt a massive blow in the race for Schalke’s Max Meyer, after the player hinted that he will not be moving this summer.

While both clubs have been linked with Julian Draxler in recent times, they have also been monitoring his 18-year-old team-mate.

Mayer is being tipped to be one of German football’s top stars in the coming years, and has already forced his way into the first-team despite his young age.

Having been advised to stay put recently by respected former Germany international Gunter Netzer, Mayer says that he will be following such instructions:

“If Mr Netzer say that, it is probably right,” he is quoted by The Express.

He then went on to play down talk of a release clause in his contract:

“I can’t tell you anything. You will have to ask other people.”

It is understood that the required sum to take the decision out of Schalke’s hands is around £21m, but such an offer may be useless with Mayer keen to develop in his homeland.

Both clubs could however up their interest in Draxler later this year.

The young playmaker is open to a big move, and is likely to be the subject of serious offers during the next transfer window.
