Southampton’s search for a new manager looks to be heading to an end as they identify Hull’s Steve Bruce as a possible successor to Mauricio Pochettino, according to MirrorFootball.

The Argentine left St. Mary’s for Tottenham last month and Southampton have since been in talks with a number of potential replacements, including Ronald Koeman who recently left his post at Feyenoord.

Koeman was the number one target for Saints but talks have recently broken down, and now the club have turned to Hull’s Steve Bruce as the perfect man to take the St. Mary’s hot-seat.

Bruce led Hull to the Premier League in 2012/2013 before taking them in to the Europa League via their first ever FA Cup final, with such success impressing the Saints hierarchy.

But executive director Les Reed has refused to shed any light on who Pochettino’s replacement will be, but has confirmed that an announcement is very close.

He told FourFourTwo: “We are closing in on our preferred candidate.

“When it was actually announcing that Mauricio was leaving we were inundated with enquiries but by and large we were amazed by the level of application who wanted to show interest in the job.

“We had possibly six to 10 candidates on our ongoing research list. We were delighted that  by the time we got down to the final four, all four of them had been on our list originally.

“Things are going well and I’m hoping we can get it sorted very quickly and the fans will be excited about an announcement coming up sooner rather than later.”
