Whilst Shawcross has emerged in recent weeks as a transfer target for the two defensively deficient Premier League teams, it’s his debt of gratitude to the Potters and manager Tony Pulis that will ultimately keep him at the club.

The 25-year-old defender stated that “I’ve told him [Pulis] I want to stay,” before adding that the most significant reason for his desire to pen a new deal with Stoke “is the gaffer.”

The England international believes that his coach has helped improve his performances year by year. He went onto further credit Pulis for his England inclusion “over the last couple of squads,” stating “he got me into the England squad because that’s been a goal of mine.”

Stoke’s 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion on the weekend marks their third successive win in three games. His tackle to stop the run of Graham Dorrans at the edge of his box following a Markus Rosenberg reverse pass empitomised his day, and his season for the Potters this term.
