Stoke City hope to land two new strikers in January, with Mark Hughes stepping up his interest in Dutch striker Luuk de Jong, while the club have also not given up hope of sorting a work permit for American forward Juan Agudelo, according to the Daily Mirror.

The club have sent scouts to watch De Jong in action recently, and hope to convince the man who was a part of the Netherlands Euro 2012 squad to make a switch to the Premier League in January.

The 23-year-old is currently plying his trade for Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach, although he has played only 71 minutes all season after a fall out with coach Lucien Favre.

The highly rated forward is desperate for a January switch in order to stake a claim for a place in Holland’s World Cup squad.

Meanwhile Agudelo – a free agent – was scheduled to join the Potters on January 1, until he was denied a work permit.

The 21-year-old forward visited the club last week, and Hughes is set to make a second attempt  to secure a work permit once they get the green light from the American international.

Stoke will need to wait until mid-March before they can make another application however, and are set to face competition for the forward’s signature in that time, with La Liga outfit Valencia also keen.

Hughes has taken comfort from the fact that Aston Villa’s American goalkeeper Brad Guzan was granted a work permit at only the second time of asking.

The Welshman has made no secret of his desire to add more firepower to the squad he inherited from Tony Pulis.
