Stoke manager Mark Hughes is plotting a January loan move for former Chelsea defender Michael Mancienne, according to reports from The Mirror.

The ex-Blues ace currently plies his trade in the German top tier with Hamburg, whom he joined after growing frustrated at a lack of playing time at Stamford Bridge.

Mancienne – who has represented England at U-21 level – has been relatively successful in the Bundesliga, but is said to be ready to return to his homeland as his current side plot fresh additions over the coming transfer windows.

Hughes is thought to be keen to take a chance on the 25-year-old, with a loan move being prepared for the opening of the transfer window.

Mancienne is most comfortable at centre-back, but his ability to play at full-back or in midfield is attractive to ‘Sparky’, with the former Manchester City boss looking to strengthen those areas within his squad.

The versatile enforcer has previously enjoyed spells with Wolves and QPR, but was unable to make the grade at Chelsea after emerging from their youth set-up.

Stoke are also looking at drafting in a new striker in a bid to keep clear of the relegation zone.
