Luis Suarez’s second-half free-kick ensure Liverpool started 2014 in the Premier League’s Champions League places with a 2-0 win over Hull.

Daniel Agger sent the Reds on their way to ending a run of successive losses when he nodded in a Phillippe Coutinho corner after 36 minutes.

Jordan Henderson and Coutinho both went close as Brendan Rodgers’ side piled on the pressure against Hull City, who created very little throughout the 90 minutes.

And Luis Suarez netted his 20th goal of the season shortly after the restart with a superbly taken free-kick in front of the Kop.

It was nothing more than Liverpool deserved having enjoyed long periods of possession, although a number of spurned opportunities meant their seventh straight Anfield victory was not as convincing as they previously have been.

Steve Bruce’s Hull defended well to ensure the result did not become a cricket score but perhaps will be disappointed that they didn’t create more, particularly after their 6-0 thrashing against Fulham last weekend.
