Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has denied claims that he is looking to leave the Stadium of Light.

The 24-year-old is believed to be a summer target for Manchester United, who are planning to replace the error prone David de Gea.

Mignolet’s representative Guy Vandermissen recently suggested that his client is looking to move on to further his career, and win back his spot from Thibaut Courtois in the Belgian national team.

But, the stopper has moved to quash these rumours, insisting that his agent’s comments were taken out of context, and that he is perfectly happy at Sunderland:

“I felt I wanted to communicate with the club’s fans following the media reaction to comments made by my representative, which I feel were taken out of context and not a true reflection.” He told the club’s official website.

“Of course, my ambition is to regain the No 1 spot with my national team, but I feel I can do that with Sunderland.

“I was playing as Belgium’s No 1 a year ago and hopefully that can be the case in the future.

“I am happy at Sunderland – a club I am proud to represent. I will continue focusing on my football.”

Mignolet has been one of the Premier League’s top goalkeepers this term, helping Sunderland maintain a respectable defensive record despite their lowly position.

These performances have alerted a number of clubs, including Manchester United, who are rumoured to be willing to spend big for his signature at the end of the current campaign.
