Sunderland new boy Liam Bridcutt is eager is take his chance at Sunderland, having made the switch from Championship side Brighton.

Despite being thrown into the deep end right away, making his debut in Sunderland’s 3-0 romp of Newcastle, Bridcutt is aware that he will face competition for a place and was surprised to be playing from the off.

The 24-year-old will certainly face direct competition from Lee Cattermole, who missed the Newcastle match with a calf injury, for a defensive midfield position. However, Bridcutt says he is relishing the battle and will look to fight for his shirt.

“It will definitely be a good battle with him. I wasn’t expecting to come in and play straightaway. But I’m here to fight for my shirt, and that’s what I’m looking to do,” Bridcutt told the Shield’s Gazette.

“Gus gave me loads of opportunities at Brighton.

“He’s helped me out throughout my career. He gave me the chance to make a name for myself.

“He saw my potential, and thought I could play a key part here, and I have to thank him for the opportunity.”
