Phil Bardsley has hailed Sunderland‘s Capital One Cup Semi-Final victory over Manchester United as remarkable.

The former United player scored in both legs to give the Black Cats the lead, only to see his efforts cancelled out by United equalisers.

But the Salford-born defender was obviously delighted to see his side finish the job on penalties.

“As a Salford boy, scoring at Old Trafford against Manchester United is unbelievable,” he told the Hartlepool Mail.

“It’s been a remarkable achievement from the lads. They’ve dug in the last three months, worked their socks off and we’re getting the rewards.”

Sunderland will now face Manchester City in the final at Wembley on March 2. It will be their first Wembley appearance for 22 years, and Bardsley is looking forward to running out at the home of football with the Black Cats.

“To take this club to Wembley and to be part of such a great day out will be phenomenal,” he added.

“I probably wasn’t one of their popular players six months ago, but that’s football.

“Hopefully I’ve turned that around and being part of this club going to Wembley is something special.”
