England manager Roy Hodgson is giving serious consideration to recalling Sunderland winger Adam Johnson, according to the Guardian.

Hodgson is on the lookout for a replacement for the injured Theo Walcott as the World Cup draws ever closer, and the former Manchester City winger’s recent form has put him firmly in the picture.

Hodgson is set to make a rare trip to Sunderland on Saturday, to watch Gus Poyet’s improving side take on Hull City.

The visit is designed to specifically check on Johnson, who has managed seven goals in his last seven games, whilst Hodgson will also have the chance to assess the form of Hull midfielder Tom Huddlestone.

Huddlestone is regarded as potential back up should any of Hodgson’s central midfielders suffer injury before the tournament.

Yet it is Johnson who is firmly in Hodgson’s thoughts, with the 26-year-old set for an international recall when England face Denmark in an international friendly at Wembley on 5 match.

Johnson looks set for an opportunity to impress in the last match before the provisional squad for the summer’s trip to Brazil is announced.

Johnson was not even a regular in the Sunderland side earlier in the season, with his last international cap coming nine days before he completed a £10million switch to the Stadium of Light in August 2012.
