Made a name for himself after scoring a stunning long-range winner against Arsenal at Anfield in a 2-1 victory in 2004.
Following that goal, Mellor was expected to go on to bigger and better things at Liverpool but he never lived up to expectations and was sent out on loan to West Ham and Wigan before signing for Preston in 2006.
His plight from Liverpool hopeful to Championship player was down to him having double knee surgery in 2005, but he enjoyed a relatively successful six years at Preston before a decent loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday.
