Jan Vertonghen believes Tottenham may have to win at Anfield in order to qualify for next season’s Champions League, reports the Daily Star.

But the Spurs defender has confidence his side can manage it, having finally beaten a rival at White Hart Lane following the 1-0 win over Everton.

Sunday’s win over Roberto Martinez’ side was the first time Tottenham had beaten a top seven side at home in the Premier League all season.

The result left Tottenham three points behind fourth placed Liverpool, and the Belgian defender believes the clash at Anfield on March 30 will go a long way to deciding who qualifies for the Champions League next season.

The last meeting between the two sides was the last match of the Andre Villas-Boas era, as Liverpool won 5-0 at White Hart Lane.

But Vertonghen insists Tottenham are now a different team under new boss Tim Sherwood, who has reintroduced in form striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

“It was a bad day for us against Liverpool and I hope when we go there… we probably need a win, so we will go for that,” Vertonghen said.

“We were unlucky as well that day. We had a lot of injuries. At the time I think we had 10 injuries and some important players as well.

“Sometimes the manager can be unlucky. Of course he had the Emmanuel Adebayor thing and some difficult business to take care of.

“Adebayor is back now, he has been unbelievable for us. Just one player coming in can affect the team.

“We don’t have to fear Liverpool. We did it last year – we won the home game and we were 2-1 up in the away game and we were the better team.

“It was one of our better games of the season. The home game this year doesn’t reflect our strengths compared to Liverpool.”
