Arsenal’s hopes of landing Lazio’s Hernanes in January have suffered a set-back, with the Italians revealing that contract talks with the midfielder are scheduled.

The Premier League pair have been heavily linked with the Brazilian for some time, and were thought to be readying winter moves for his services.

Hernanes’ current contract is set to expire at the end of next season, which had promoted speculation that he may be allowed to leave the Stadio Olimpico in a cut-price deal in the coming months.

However, Lazio have always held form in their stance that will not be allowed to leave, and now the club’s president, Claudio Lotito, has revealed that the South American’s future will be discussed soon:

“We have a meeting regarding the contract of Hernanes pencilled in for the next few weeks,” he is quoted by the Daily Star.

“Am I hopeful? I’m used to dealing with facts. I don’t bandage up my head before breaking it.”

The 28-year-old has been a huge hit in Serie A since his 2009 arrival from Sao Paulo, alerting a number of top clubs from Italy and across Europe.

Tottenham and Arsenal are likely to continue to monitor the situation, and may pounce if negotiations are unsuccessful.

Should Arsenal or Tottenham do all they can to sign Hernanes?
