Andre Villas-Boas refuses to blame squad fatigue
Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas refused to blame fatigue for his sides surprise defeat at home to Fulham.
Spurs, who were looking to cement their bid for Champions League qualification, went down to a single goal from former White Hart Lane favourite Dimitar Berbatov.
But the Spurs boss wasn’t looking for excuses, despite their exploits in Europe on Thursday night.
“It was difficult and it is two defeats in a row in the Premier League and we wanted to avoid that because we were on a good run,” Villas-Boas told Sky Sports.
“We had a decent game, but we couldn’t create as much as we normally create at home offensively.
“It was one of those defeats we have to reflect on. The desire and effort was there, but things just didn’t go our way in terms of football.”
When questioned on the subject AVB reiterated that his sides trip to Milan in midweek was not to blame for his sides defeat and insisted it wasn’t a factor that came in to play.
“We played lots of players who were not involved recently and had a couple of fresh legs on the pitch – five at least.” he explained.
Towards the end only a smart save from Mark Schwarzer stopped Jermain Defoe earning his side a point, a save that was recognised by the Spurs boss.
“Towards the later stages of the game we had opportunities with Defoe and if we could got the equaliser we could have pushed for a winner, but Schwarzer did ever so well to deny Defoe and Fulham deserved to win,” concluded Villas-Boas.
The defeat leaves Spurs fourth in the Premier League a point clear of rivals Arsenal in fifth, however the Gunners’ have a game in hand.
