West Brom.

The Macedonian defender received a straight red card during the second-half of the game for spitting at Kyle Walker.

His actions were openly criticised by Baggies chief Steve Clarke, and AVB echoed his disappointment as the Albion man:

“It’s difficult for the ref, but Popov did what he did and Walker did nothing to react.” He told Sky Sports.

“It’s difficult to assess but I think Mark Clattenburg made the right decision. It’s horrible and nasty.”

Despite the unsavoury incident, the Portuguese manager was happy with his team’s efforts.

Their victory at the Hawthorns followed a midweek away draw with Norwich to keep the Londoners’ push for Champions League qualification on track.

AVB praised the efforts of his players across the week, and played up their chances of securing a spot in Europe’s top club competition:

“It has been a very important week for us,

“To get four points away from home, with not much time between the games, is excellent.

“We have put ourselves in a very good position to threaten for third place.”

Gareth Bale settled the close encounter with just over 20 minutes to play. The Welsh winger crashed home a fine effort from 20 yards to take his league tally to ten.
