Even the most hardened of Spurs fans will probably admit that the cult German hero was a, shall we say, surprise choice, when he was employed as Andre Villas-Boas’ number two during the summer. But either way, Freund has come home and White Hart Lane is happy to have him back.
Despite bagging a Champions League medal with Borussia Dortmund and a European Championship with Germany, it became quickly apparent after his move to N17, that he may not exactly have been a talismanic figure in either of those teams.
Hard working and industrious, Freund was sometimes nothing short of pony for the Lilywhites, but that’s not why fans still sing his name. His woefully poor shooting ability, continued need to wind opponents up and perpetual volleys of abuse at referees, is why he remains a terrace hero. And to top it all off, he once took his son on a Spurs away day in 2005.
That’s why we love Steffen Freund. And we think he loves us too.
