During his nine-month tenure at Stamford Bridge AVB fell out of favour with some of the team’s more senior personnel, as well as a large section of the press.

With the likes of Luka Modric and Rafael Van der Vaart leaving White Hart Lane – two of the 2011/12 season’s most significant performers – AVB has still kept Spurs in contention for third in the Premier League, winning the Barclays Manager of the Month in the process.

“What we are doing nowadays at Tottenham with my staff is a reaction toward Chelsea, an echo to the mistakes we did,” said AVB speaking to France Football.

“Everything we did there was not wrong, but we could have done better. It has not affected the way I am viewing football, but I admit I thought a lot about it.”

Commenting on his decision to handle the Hugo Lloris and Brad Friedel situation, the Portuguese said, “When Hugo was transferred it was to embody Tottenham’s future. His qualities have never been questioned, but Brad was very good at that moment. Hugo was transferred on Friday. The next day, Brad achieved an amazing match against Norwich.

“It was fair to play a boy with such performance levels. That didn’t mean I [had] doubt about Hugo’s qualities, but I wanted him to stand out on merit but not on his reputation. Sometimes you have to act considering the group not [the] individual. It was difficult for Hugo. I admit sometimes it could make him impatient.”
