Former Sheffield United and QPR chief Neil Warnock believes that Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino is too “inexperienced” to be Tottenham’s next manager.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy sacked Tim Sherwood earlier this week to bring his short tenure at White Hart Lane to a close, and the current Saints gaffer is being lined up as his replacement.

Pochettino has taken the South Coast club from a side that was battling to stay in the Premier League under Nigel Adkins – who got the Hampshire outfit to the top tier from League One – to a team that has firmly established midtable security while playing attractive football.

Levy is thought to be a big fan of the Argentine, with reports indicating that he has already approached Southampton to discuss a deal.

But Warnock – a vastly experienced coach in the English game – believes that Pochettino is not the right man for the Spurs job:

“I don’t think Pochettino is the answer because he’s inexperienced,” he told talkSPORT.

“To go to a club like Southampton, and I’m not being disrespectful to Southampton, there’s no expectation.

“They’ve got young lads and they’re going to sell one here or there whereas at Spurs there’s so much expectation. Harry [Redknapp] got them fourth and they’ve been trying to get fourth ever since and they’ve been thinking they were doing the right thing sacking all these managers.

“I don’t think Pochettino’s got enough about him. It’s too big a club for him to warrant getting that job. It’s a massive gamble if [Daniel] Levy does it but he might be the only one available.”
