Former Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe believes that his old club are ready to stick by new manager Mauricio Pochettino after a turbulent few years at White Hart Lane.

Spurs are now on their 6th head coach since 2004, with Harry Redknapp the only man to have seen out more than three years in the dugout.

Tim Sherwood took over from Andre Villas-Boas over the winter, but his year-and-a-half contract was terminated in under six months.

The instability is further amplified by local rivals Arsenal, who have had just one manager, Arsene Wenger, since 1996, while the Lilywhites have had 10 in the same period.

Pochettino penned a five-year contract with Tottenham earlier this summer and Defoe – who left the club during the winter to move to Toronto in the MLS – believes that the Argentine will be given time:

“Speaking to the lads, they love him already, they say training is really sharp, with a lot of pressing. With the players they have got at Tottenham, and with that manager, I think they will do well.” He is quoted by the London Evening Standard.

“There have been a lot of managers come and go but I think this one is there to stay,”
