In my opinion, the decline of the premier league started when Jose Mourinho left. During his time there, English clubs experienced their golden era in the Champions League for about 3-4 years. I have no doubt this is due to his tactical nous which spilled over to the other English club managers i.e. Ferguson, Wenger and to some extent Rafa Benitez.

Having said that, there’s no denying the loss of CR7 had an impact on the league as a whole.
