Napoli are hopeful that they can tempt Tottenham to let Jan Vertonghen leave in exchange for Valon Behrami this summer, according to reports from Fichajes.net.

The Spurs defender has been a key man at the club since his 2012 arrival from Ajax, but has recently expressed a desire to leave White Hart Lane in search of Champions League football.

With Tim Sherwood’s men currently unlikely to sneak into the top four – seven points and a poor goal difference separate them from Arsenal – Vertonghen is said to be considering his options ahead of the coming transfer window.

This has alerted Napoli, who are keen to take advantage of the Londoners’ rumoured interest in Behrami.

The Swiss star is believed to be a major target for Tottenham, with some reports suggesting that contact between the club and the player’s agent has already been made.

Napoli are understood to be ready to accept a straight swap, which would see the two men head in opposite directions.

However Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is likely to be aware that Vertonghen has a higher market value than versatile midfielder Behrami.

The 28-year-old previously spent three years at West Ham, where he was somewhat of a cult hero thanks to his tireless performances and ability to occupy a number of different roles.
