Europa League.

The England international scored all three for Spurs as they secured a 3-1 victory over their Slovenian rivals.

His goals on the night took the striker past Teddy Sheringham in the White Hart Lane scoring charts, an achievement he is proud of:

“Its special to go past Teddy.” He told ITV.

“He was a great player for club and country. I watched him when I was growing up so it’s great for me personally.”

Despite the personal glory, the 30-year-old was happier with the result and his team’s performance:

“We needed to win to bounce back from the weekend (defeat to Wigan).

“We pressed high from the minute go. The tempo was good, the movement was good, we kept the ball better and we’re all delighted.”

His team-mate Gareth Bale was also pleased with the performance and insisted the squad are committed to achieving in the competition:

“Everyone wants to be playing in the Champions League, but this is the next best thing, we’re taking it seriously and hopefully we can do well.”

Defoe put Spurs ahead after 22 minutes with a precise finish.

The travelling side then equalised through Robert Beric, before the ex-Portsmouth forward netted twice more to complete the scoring.
