QPR boss Harry Redknapp says that Tottenham’s slide away from the top four is down to the sales of big name duo Luka Modric and Gareth Bale.

The former Spurs coach oversaw the club’s most successful period in recent memory, with his four seasons at White Hart Lane yielding two top four finishes – albeit one didn’t garner Champions League qualification as Chelsea won the competition – one fifth slot and the League Cup.

Since ‘Arry’s departure the north Londoners have not been back at Europe’s top table, with two managers having since been sacked by chairman Daniel Levy for a failure to secure Champions League action.

In that period they have sold Bale and Modric to Real Madrid for around £120m combined, and Redknapp believes that the exits of the pair have made it difficult for the club to reach the heights they’ve been aiming for:

“My view is Tottenham were going to struggle when they decided to sell Luka Modric and Gareth Bale to Real Madrid,” he told the London Evening Standard.

“Some players are irreplaceable and those two fall into that category. You can go out into the transfer market and try to fill the void left by their departure but some players are priceless and it’s not easy to do.

“I was extremely fortunate to have them. They were a pleasure to be around. I used to watch them destroy teams and got just as excited as the fans did watching them play.”

Redknapp will make his first return to Spurs since his 2012 sacking on Sunday, as he takes his newly promoted QPR side across London.
