Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood has backed under fire striker Roberto Soldado to start a goal-scoring spree, after watching the Spaniard fire the winner against Cardiff City yesterday, reports the Daily Star.

The £26million man struck his first goal in nine games to take Tottenham to within four points of the Champions League places.

And Sherwood believes it will be the first of many more to come for the former Valencia striker.

“Robbie scored goals in a top league in Spain. We know what he’s capable of. I’ve stuck by him and I believe he will come good,” Sherwood said.

“I just hope this is a platform for him to go on and score 20 goals between now and the end of the season!

“If I could have picked anyone to score the winning goal it would have been him. You could see how much it meant to him.”

Soldado has come in for criticism for managing just one Premier League goal in open play all season before yesterday’s strike, and was branded a ‘donkey’ by former Tottenham chairman Alan Sugar.

“I’m not sure he knows who Alan Sugar is. He’s Spanish,” Sherwood added.

After Soldado’s goal, Sugar tweeted last night: “On reflection calling him a donkey was harsh. I sent him a present to the dressing room. A bag of carrots!”

Tottenham skipper Michael Dawson also backed Soldado to come good, saying after the game: “We have been wishing it in for him. We are just delighted to see him score. The fans have been behind him every step of the way and he is a top player.”
