At £26 million, many Tottenham fans will likely question to merits of bringing in Roberto Soldado this past summer. The Spaniard arrived with the promise of goals, having been a regular at the top of the scoring charts in La Liga over the past four seasons. Moreover, he has the experience of playing at the highest level in the Champions League and winning a place in the top four. From the off, he looked the ideal addition to the Spurs team.

But the system deployed under Andre Villas-Boas led to inconsistency. Soldado was simply not getting the service he had while playing at Valencia. He’s been reliable from the penalty spot, where, to his credit, he could have crumbled under the pressure of needing to find the net. In addition, while confidence in front of goal may be a current issue, there’s certainly a good level of effort produced from Soldado at this time. He’s shown himself to be mobile and intelligent in the final third.

With Spurs still in the race for a top four spot, these are six ways Tottenham can get the best out of Soldado.
