Andros Townsend is desperate for a recall to the Tottenham first team to boost his chances of making Roy Hodgson’s World Cup squad, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 22-year-old has returned to full fitness, but has struggled for regular first team football under Tim Sherwood.

Townsend looked a World Cup certainty earlier in the season after some electrifying displays for his country in the final World Cup qualifiers.

But since then, injuries have taken their toll, and the form of Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling and Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain mean his World Cup place is at risk.

Sterling has been superb in helping Liverpool mount a shock title challenge, whilst Chamberlain has returned from injury to help Arsenal’s own title push.

Townsend was included in the squad to face Denmark last week, and came on with four minutes to go.

The Spurs winger said recently: “I’ve been watching games and seeing everyone doing well but that just gives me an incentive to come back and to play even better than I was before.”

Meanwhile Tottenham have been handed a boost ahead of Sunday’s north London derby with Arsenal, after successfully appealing Younes Kaboul’s sending off at Chelsea on Saturday.
