With Porto rumoured to have inserted a €40million release clause within the Colombian’s contract, the Lilywhites could have a job on their hands to prise Martinez away from Portugal, but after the season he is continuing to enjoy at the Estadio do Dragao, his striking talents simply cannot be overlooked.
Having already scored a stunning 23 goals in 22 league games for Porto, Martinez is wielding an almost identical impact to the one a certain Radamel Falcao produced during his first season in Portugal and should he carry on like he has done, he’ll have the cream of Europe on their knees looking to sign him.
Happy to drop deep and build up play as well possessing the sort of finishing skills Spurs have desperately missed this season, Martinez fits the bill as the sort of striker Villas-Boas is looking for perfectly.
Following their dealings with Porto in their recent efforts to sign Joao Moutinho, however, Tottenham know just how difficult the club are to deal with and although release clauses are usually more of a bargaining tool as opposed to an asking price set in stone, the sort of money that both Hulk and Falcao went for in recent years suggests they’re hardly in any rush to sell.
He’d break the bank to purchase, but as Atletico Madrid are now finding out after splashing an unprecedented amount of money on Falcao, the rewards are there to be reaped.
