Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has suggested that he may look to leave the club if they fail to qualify for the Champions League this season.

Spurs’ major aim for the current campaign is to return to European football’s top competition, with £110m of summer investment in the first-team behind the project.

After changing manager from Andre Villas-Boas to Tim Sherwood following a difficult start to the season, the North London club are still in contention to secure a top four finish, but they currently trail Liverpool – who occupy the spot – by six points.

The Reds have been in excellent form and also possess a superior goal difference, which has sparked talk that Spurs may struggle to overhaul them.

Vertonghen has been a key member of the Tottenham first-team since his 2012 arrival from Ajax, but he says that he may be forced to consider leaving if Champions League football is not secured:

“Those are always difficult questions. What I want is to play in the Champions League with Tottenham, so, hopefully, I will get there this year,” He is quoted by The Metro.

“I don’t complain about anything. Let’s see after the end of the season and after the World Cup.”
