Tottenham boss hails ‘great performance’
The White Hart Lane club registered their first win in Europe this season, after drawing their three opening Group J games, courtesy of a wonderful Jermain Defoe hat-trick.
And Villas-Boas was clearly delighted with the way his players bounced back from their shock 1-0 home defeat to Wigan in the Premier League last weekend.
He told Tottenham’s official website: “It was fantastic to see the players put in such effort and be so determined to bounce back from the defeat we had at the weekend.
“At half-time, we really had nothing to say, we could only pay compliments for what the players were doing.
“Again, we bounced back from adversity and showed great resilience, effort and commitment. It was a great performance, the way we kept possession, kept the ball moving and created so many opportunities.”
The Portugeuse manager also praised hat-trick hero Jermain Defoe, who’s treble took his Spurs goal tally to 126, overtaking Teddy Sheringham’s 124 to put him eighth in the club’s all-time goal scoring charts.
“Jermain was brilliant and he is such a prolific striker,” he added.
“He was chasing to overtake Teddy, so it was important for him.
“He doesn’t take his chances lightly. He focuses, he scores and it was great to watch him.”
Defoe’s next target is to better Alan Gilzean’s 133 Tottenham goals, although he still has some way to go to surpass Spurs’ all-time leading goalscorer Jimmy Greaves who scored 266 goals for Tottenham.
