Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood believes that his side have no chance of securing a top four finish if they cannot beat the teams at the top end of the Premier League following their loss at Chelsea.

Spurs slipped to a disappointing 4-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, with Younes Kaboul’s red card proving to be a bitter blow for the North London club.

Samuel Eto’o had opened the scores before the defender was dismissed for a foul on the Cameroonian striker in the area – from which Eden Hazard converted from the penalty spot.

Demba Ba netted a late brace to compete the scoring and cap a thoroughly substandard evening for Tottenham.

The result puts Sherwood’s men in fifth spot and four points adrift on Manchester City in fourth – with the Sky Blues possessing three games in hand.

As well as this, it leaves Tottenham with a record of five losses in their last six meetings against the current top four, something that their boss feels may curtail a push for Champions League qualification:

“We aren’t going to finish top-four if you can’t beat the top teams. It ain’t going to happen, you’re miles away unless you beat the top teams,” he told Sky Sports.

“You have to pick up some points. All right, we beat [Man] United and Everton around us, but you can’t rely on rolling over the smaller sides – it does not work out like that.

“We did all right in patches, but there are too many blips – you are talking about fourth, people at the club, but wake up.”
