Tottenham are discussing a £21m move for Mateo Musacchio with Villarreal, according to reports from The Mirror.

The Argentine centre-back – a former target for Barcelona and Liverpool – shone for the Spaniards last term as he helped them on their return to La Liga after a short spell out of the top tier.

His displays impressed Spurs chief Mauricio Pochettino, who is keen to reshuffle his backline after taking control at White Hart Lane.

Musacchio is seen as a good partner for Jan Vertonghen, with the Argentine coach keen to ensure that the massive defeats which haunted the Lilywhites’ 2013/14 campaign are not repeated.

Villarreal value their man at £21m, but Tottenham are understood to have opened negotiations with a £16m offer.

Although a large bid, El Submarino Amarillo may well reject as they owe 35% of any fee received to River Plate.

Musacchio is a classy centre-back who has been praised for his ability on the ball as well as his sound defensive characteristics.
