Tottenham are the latest side to have entered the running for Cagliari defender Davide Astori, according to reports from talkSPORT.

The 27-year-old centre-back is currently one of Serie A’s most highly-rated enforcers, and has already been linked with Southampton and a number of Italian clubs on the back of some impressive displays.

Despite uncertainty surrounding the future of Tim Sherwood as manager, chairman Daniel Levy is ready to sanction big moves in the transfer market to avoid a summer of disappointment in north London.

With Jan Vertonghen – who could be heading to Italy to join Roma – expected to leave the club after another season of missing out on Champions League qualification, Astori is seen as a top target.

The 27-year-old is thought of as the sort of player who could slot into the Lilywhites’ starting XI straight away and help them in their pursuit of a top four slot in 2014/15.

Tottenham will have to see off serious interest to secure a deal, but the classy defender may be open to a Premier League move.

Astori started his career at AC Milan and has earned seven international caps.
