Tottenham are now leading the race to secure a free transfer for Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand this summer, according to reports from The Metro.

The former England international is due to be without a club in the coming weeks, with his contract at Old Trafford set to end.

Despite him having been one of their key men since his 2002 arrival, United have opted against offering him an extension, as they plot to usher in a new era of success under Louis van Gaal.

QPR and West Ham have been linked with moves for the 35-year-old, but now Spurs have emerged as the most likely takers for the veteran.

The White Hart Lane outfit are attracted to Ferdinand’s wealth of experience and see him as a good option as Jan Vertonghen continues to stall on committing himself to the Lilywhites until their new manager’s identity is known.

The former Leeds ace is thought to have offers on the table from Galatasaray and MLS giants LA Galaxy, yet remaining in England could be tempting for him.
