Tottenham have snapped up Argentine defender Federico Fazio from Sevilla on a four-year deal.

Spurs have been chasing the Europa League winner over the course of the past few weeks after switching their crosshairs away from Villarreal’s Mateo Musacchio.

The fee paid for the classy enforcer is thought to be in the region of £8m, which triggered the release clause in his previous contract.

With Michael Dawson sold to Hull, Mauricio Pochettino was keen to draft in another centre-back, with Fazio seen as the sort of player who can slot into their high-tempo pressing game.

The 27-year-old is also able to play in a holding midfield role, and has been capped twice at international level.

He was a star for Argentina at U-20 level, helping his nation to win the 2007 World Cup, before collecting Olympic gold at the 2008 games in Beijing.

Speaking to the club’s website, he said: “I’m really happy to be here at this club, this great club with very good players. I’m really happy to be here.”

“I come to Tottenham because I think it’s a very good team, a very good club, very good fans.”
