Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen believes that the only difference between his side and Liverpool is Luis Suarez.

The two teams were expected to be major rivals for fourth spot this term, but the Reds’ impressive form has put them in the battle for the Premier League title, while Spurs’ decision to sell Gareth Bale appears to have had a major impact on a season which looks likely culminate in Europa League qualification at best.

Liverpool themselves came close to selling Suarez over the summer, as their man actively chased a switch to Real Madrid.

But the Merseysiders dug their heels in to keep him, and speaking ahead of Sunday’s game between the two sides, Vertonghen feels that that decision is the main reason Liverpool are in a better position and playing better football:

“Suarez, Suarez is the reason,” he is quoted by The Express.

“At the moment he is up there as one of the best strikers in the world. I think he is the difference between the teams.

“(Daniel) Sturridge obviously is doing well and those two are very hard to stop.”

Vertonghen played alongside Suarez at Ajax before following him to the Premier League, and he believes that his old team-mate has helped turn his current side into one of the division’s best:

“They are one of the best teams in the league and they show it every week,

“It is going to be very hard, especially at Anfield, and I hope we can play as we did last season because we did very well.”
