Tottenham are ready to offer Jan Vertonghen a pay rise amid rumours that he is ready to quit the club if they fail to qualify for the Champions League this season, according to reports from The Metro.

The Belgian ace has hinted that he may be forced to pursue an exit of Spurs miss out on a spot at Europe’s top table again, which looks to be possible as they currently trail Liverpool – who occupy fourth place – by six points after a shock weekend loss at Norwich.

Vertonghen is said to be a target for Manchester City, who are believed to be considering an end of season raid if the defender’s situation in North London deteriorates.

The 26-year-old has been a massive hit since his £12m arrival from Ajax in 2012, and Tottenham are desperate to keep hold of him.

As a result, they are said to be looking to tempt him with a £40,000-per-week deal, which if signed will deter rival offers.

However, Vertonghen may be aware that he could earn a significantly larger salary away from White Hart Lane, particularly if City come in for him.

The silky centre-back may hold off of making a decision until after the 2014 World Cup, during which time he is likely to be in the glare of clubs from across the continent.

Perhaps he should stop giving away free kicks just outside the penalty area!
