Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has set his sights on Manchester United’s Javier Hernandez with Jermain Defoe’s future at White Hart Lane uncertain, according to reports from the London Evening Standard.

The Spurs forward has been heavily linked with a switch to MLS side Toronto FC in recent weeks, with some rumours suggesting that a deal is almost done to take the England international across the Atlantic Ocean.

However, AVB is only willing to sanction the sale if he can lure in a top class replacement, and sees Hernandez as the ideal candidate.

The Mexican has struggled for game time at Old Trafford both last season and during the current campaign, with Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney firmly ahead of him in the pecking order.

Hernandez is thought to have grown frustrated at this, alerting the London club.

Villas-Boas spent £26m on Roberto Soldado over the summer in a bid to solve his side’s striking concerns, but the Spaniard has struggled to adapt to the Premier League, netting just four goals – three of which have been from the penalty spot.

Hernandez on the other hand has a proven track record for finding the back of the net in England, with the ‘The Little Pea’ having even been compared to former Liverpool and United goal-getter Michael Owen.

Defoe has recently found himself thrust back into Spurs’ starting XI, but may well be allowed to leave if a deal for the United ace can be tied up.
