Louis van Gaal will look to make Ajax defender Joel Veltman his first major signing if he gets the Tottenham job this summer, according to reports from The Mirror.

The experienced Dutchman – who is currently Holland’s coach heading into the World Cup – has widely been tipped to succeed Tim Sherwood at White Hart Lane once the current campaign comes to and end, with discussions with chairman Daniel Levy rumoured to have already taken place.

If he does take over the north Londoners, van Gaal is set to enter the transfer market to right some of the wrongs of Andre Villas-Boas’ mega spend last year, and has set his sights of Veltman.

The talented 22-year-old centre-back is currently thought of as one of Dutch football’s top talents, and is already a valued first-team player in Amsterdam.

Van Gaal is known to be a fan of his abilities after handing him his Oranje debut, and may look to use his relationship with the player to lure him to Spurs.

Ajax director Marc Overmars has already indicated that he is willing to fight to keep the youngster, but a big money offer may prove too good to ignore.
