Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has backed Emmanuel Adebayor to rediscover his goal scoring form.

The Togo international is set to start for Spurs in the second leg of their Europa League last-32 tie with Lyon, with Jermain Defoe injured.

Adebayor completed a permanent move to White Hart Lane from Manchester City last summer, following a successful loan stint in North London, during which he struck 18 goals.

However, he has been less successful this term, finding the back of the net on only three occasions, whilst struggling to hold down a regular starting berth.

But, AVB has backed Adebayor to recover from his blip and rediscover his goal scoring touch:

“He can still be the player we saw last season,” he is quoted by Sky Sports.

“We’re trying to unlock the best out of the player. Last year shows as an example for what we’re trying to get out of him.

“Strikers live off goals and we’re doing everything we can to try and unlock his full potential.”

Adebayor’s poor form has led to much criticism from fans and pundits, with some questioning whether he is good enough for Tottenham’s first-team.

But, AVB feels that he pays very little attention to doubters and will recover:

“I’m not sure if it bothers him,” he said.

“Players build their own motivations. Perceptions and media opinions can influence the public in general, but I think the player strives on his own motivation in the end.”
