Villas-Boas hails ‘incredible’ Bale
The Welsh winger netted two spectacular free-kicks to give the Londoners an aggregate lead in their last-32 tie with the French giants.
With game level at 1-1 at the end of normal time, it looked as if Spurs would be traveling to the Stade de Gerland needing to score at least one goal, but Bale netted a dramatic winner deep into stoppage time.
AVB was delighted with the winger’s performance, singling him out for special praise after the game:
“It is incredible. Not only his all-round game but also this ability he has to strike these free-kicks,” he told Sky Sports.
“The ball gains so much power when he strikes it and it changes direction so easily.
“Today we saw not just two moments of brilliance but three, because their goal was absolutely fantastic too.”
The Portuguese coach was also happy with the rest of his players for their part in an exciting match:
“It played out to be an excellent game, maybe the first half a bit more exciting because in the second half both teams struggled to get the ball on the ground and get moving.
“But we saw those moments of individual brilliance and Bale was fantastic also.”
Bale opened the scoring just before half-time with a swerving free-kick from 35 yards.
Lyon equalised ten minutes after the break through Samuel Umtiti, but Bale gave the Londoners a valuable lead late on.
