Steve Clarke believes that it is his West Brom players who deserve credit not him, for their brilliant start to this season, with yesterday’s victory over Southampton meaning they are now fifth in the Premier League table.

Clarke has praised the attitude of the players, telling Sky Sports: “Like I say it’s been a good start, but it’s not for me to take any credit. The players I have selected have been fantastic; they have approached every game with the right attitude and got their reward for that approach.”

Despite his praise, Clarke reiterated that the main target is to remain in the Premier League for next season.

“I think we’ve said from the start we focus on the primary target which is to make sure the Albion are in the Premier League again next year. That is always the first target and we are on the way to that, we’ve given ourselves a real good start and we have to build on that.

“The quicker we reach the safety margin or the quicker we feel comfortable that we are going to be in the league next year we will look at other targets.”

The West Brom boss is glad to see his side get their season started again after two defeats in a row before last night’s match.

“We spoke before the game about making sure we got our season back on track. We’ve had two good performances and no points and I don’t think the performance was as well as we’ve played this year, but we controlled the game and got the win we wanted. The timing of the second goal was perfect for us,” he added.

“I thought Southampton were starting to get a foothold in the game and we got them in the counter.”

Peter Odemwingie revealed to West Brom’s official website that words from Steve Clarke before the match inspired the Baggies to victory.

“The head coach said something which stayed in my head ‘no good team loses three times in a row,’” said the Nigerian striker who scored both of West Brom’s goals last night.
