New West Brom manager Pepe Mel wants to be playing Europa League football in the near future, but won’t have the funds to sign anyone in this transfer window.

The Birmingham Mail are reporting that despite the sale of Shane Long to Hull City, Mel will not be given a transfer budget this month, and will have to wait until the summer to before signing a replacement forward.

The 50-year-old has compared the Baggies with his former club Real Betis, and has outlined his plans for the Midlands side: “The teams are at a similar level – Betis in La Liga and West Brom in the Premier League, so it really is the same job, and at Betis we did the the job very successfully.” said Mel.

“West Brom need to have an aggressive approach, and in my personal opinion create more goalscoring opportunities. They were four very tough years of work in Betis, and here it is the same job I’ve got to do.

“In one year we want to be fighting for the places that give access to the Europa League. I’m someone who really does like challenges, and to achieve things you really need to work very hard.”

Mel’s first game in charge is at home to Everton on Monday.
