Sam Allardyce has admitted he would love to complete a deal to bring Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen to West Ham, but conceded that the possibility remains unlikely, reports the Metro.

Vermaelen has found himself linked with a move away from the Emirates this month, either on loan or on a permanent basis.

The Belgian has struggled for first team football at the Emirates, with the form of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker leaving him on the bench more often than not.

And with the summer’s World Cup fast approaching, Vermaelen is concerned for his international place, having made only 11 appearances in all competitions this season.

However, Allardyce is pretty certain the Gunners have no intention of selling their club captain this January.

“I think under the circumstances at Arsenal, in the position that they’re in, in the Champions League and cup matches, they’ve had to use him as soon as any of the two defenders have been injured,” Allardyce said.

“So I don’t think there’s any chance we’ll get somebody of his quality. It would be nice if I we could.

“I’ve had targets and I haven’t got one yet apart from Roger Johnson, so I’ll keep going and hope we get some.”
