Southampton striker Rickie Lambert is in talks with West Ham, according to the Daily Mail.

The Hammers are desperately looking to bolster their strike force this month, and have once again turned to the Englishman to solve their goal-scoring issues.

While Southampton are yet to agree a deal with West Ham, who are prepared to offer £7million for the 31-year-old, they are willing to sell the forward. The news comes just a day after club chairman Nicola Cortese resigned from his post, leading to speculation over the future of manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The Saints boss had claimed in the past that he would leave should Cortese exit the club, with the chairman’s relationship with Southampton owner Katharina Liebherr less than stable. Now Cortese has gone, there are suggestions that the club will start to collapse, with their big stars possibly exiting the club along with Pochettino.

It’s a welcome sight for Sam Allardyce, who hasn’t hidden his desire for a new striker. But despite Andy Carroll returning from injury, Carlton Cole extending his stay for another 18 months, and new Monaco signing Lacina Traore being given the green light to move to Upton Park on loan, the Hammers boss is still eyeing up Lambert.

Lambert has scored six league goals this season, just two less than the club’s top Premier League scorer Jay Rodriguez. But his goal against Cardiff City on Boxing Day may have been his last for the Saints, as West Ham close in on the forward.
