West Ham are targeting Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott as the man to help them in their relegation struggle, according to the Guardian.

Lescott has slipped to fourth choice centre back under City boss Manuel Pellegrini, although he may reject a transfer to Upton Park reported to be work £90,000-a-week, as he hopes to join a higher placed club to help boost his chances of making England’s World Cup squad.

The 31-year-old is still hopeful of being a part of Roy Hodgson’s squad, but knows he needs to be playing regular first team football.

West Ham have reportedly offered a deal worth £90k a week until the end of the season, while also offering him £70k a week should the club drop down into the Championship.

Despite interest from the Hammers, City boss Manuel Pellegrini is keen to ensure Lescott remains at the Etihad.

“When this transfer window is over at the end of January, we will see what happens,” Pellegrini said. “At the moment, Joleon will stay here with the team.”

The Hammers are keen to complete the deal as quickly as possible, especially with James Tomkins’ upcoming suspension following his sending off at Cardiff on Saturday.
